“The vehicle was consumed by fire,” said OPP spokesperson Sergeant Kerry Schmidt. “It’s a very tragic situation there right now.”

Two people are dead after a single-vehicle collision on Eastport Drive early Tuesday.

The crash, which took place just before 6 a.m. near Beach Boulevard, involved a 2017 Lexus sedan, OPP spokesperson Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said on Twitter.

It’s believed the vehicle rolled over and hit the guardrail before igniting, he added.

“The vehicle was consumed by fire,” Schmidt said. “It’s a very tragic situation there right now.”

Early reports indicate the vehicle may have been “travelling at a high rate of speed”, he said.

The vehicle has been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences with the two bodies in it, Schmidt said.

No details have yet been released on the driver or passenger. Schmidt said police are working on notifying next of kin.

Schmidt said early Tuesday afternoon he did not expect the two people killed would be identified until later this week.

Eastport Drive under the Skyway Bridge was reopened shortly before 11 a.m. after being closed for several hours for investigation.

Schmidt said roads were dry at the time of the crash. However, police were warning drivers to brace for a sloppy and potentially treacherous commute with freezing rain expected to start early Tuesday and last for several hours.
