Every owner or lessee of a motor vehicle who drives without insurance or refuses to show their proof of insurance to a police officer when requested to do so is guilty of an offence and is liable to receive a no insurance charge.
A first charge can be between $5000 and $25,000. Any subsequent charge can be between $10,000 and $50,000. In addition, an owner’s driver’s licence may be suspended for a period of no more than one year.
